20 July 2021 – Small is Big – Part 5

Judges 7:7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.”

Few is many in God’s military strategy. Gideon marched with 32,000 soldiers against the forces of the Midianites enemy but the Lord sent back 22,000 men home who were trembling with fear and 9,700 men who were not vigilant while they drank water. Three hundred men (300) against the multitude of the Midianites and Amalekites were more than sufficient to fulfil “The Almighty’s battle plan”. The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore (Judges 7:12). The weaponry of Israelite army of 300 men were trumpets, clay pots and torches.

Israel had no armoury, swords, spears or shields. The strength of the army back in those days was the muscle of the number of arms (people) but the Lord broke their strength by sending 31,700 fighting men home. The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ (Vs 2). The three hundred men surrounded the enemy’s camp, blew their trumpets, broke the pitchers and raised a sound of victory – “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” The sound of praise (trumpet) caused the enemies to rise up against each other and flee. “Few is too many” when the arm of the Almighty is fighting for us.

The armoury of God:

1.   Trumpets: The Almighty’s battle strategy is to pick up the trumpet of praise. When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords (Judges 7:22). We must not complain in fear or freeze in fret. We must blow the trumpet of praise when the devouring enemy comes against us like a locust. Praise is the secret to victory. Trumpet brings triumph.

2.   Torches: Torch is the Word of God. The puny army of three hundred men with Gideon were grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow.  The divine strategy to win our battles is to blow the trumpet and lift up the torch. Speak the Word of God over your threats, dryness and blockades. Let the light from God’s Word strengthen your faith and drive out hostility, animosity and evil conspiracy. Torches light up our trajectory

3.   Trust: Trust God tenaciously. Let your heart not sink at the limited strength, wisdom, finances, friends, influence or resources. Few is too many for the Lord. 32,000 men were too many to fight in the Lord’s army. Fear will dissipate and faith will surge when we shift our eyes from the schemes of the enemy and set them on the scriptures. Praise and Promises will instil hope and faith. Trumpets and torches tighten our trust in Him.

Few is too many when the arm of the Almighty fights our battles.

Deuteronomy 20:4 For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.”

Prayer: Abba Father, It is not by might nor by strength but by your Spirit I will win my battles. My feeble hands become powerful when armed with the trumpet of praise and the touch of your Word. Few is too many for you. Amen.
