29 October 2021 – Are We There Yet? – Part 1

Exodus 12:39 With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.

“Are we there Yet?” is a 2005 American award winning comedy movie about an incessant and unplanned journey. By mid 2020, the cities, villages, valleys, meadows and mountains echoed the same rhythmic rhyme  – “Are we there yet?”. As the invisible pathogen swept the nations and confined us within the boundaries of our gates, frustrated kids and kindred were exasperated.

The Hebrew slaves left Egypt in haste.  After living for 430 years in Egypt, the journey of Exodus was announced overnight. They had to pack, wrap, drape and vacate in a hurry. The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country (Exodus 12:33). They had no time to prepare for the long awaited exit out of Egypt. Hence at the first stop in the wilderness, they baked flat bread with unfermented dough which had no yeast for the bread to bubble or rise. The unexpected lockdowns put the world through similar experience. We were not prepared for the journey ahead. Normalcy became a luxury overnight and we were force fed unleavened bread of rules, restrictions and restrains.

However, God is the God of Exodus.  He is not only the God of beginnings, He is also the Lord of the exits! The Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt (Exodus 12:41). God who watched over the exodus over the Hebrew slaves will wade us through the journey of uncertainties.

He is the God of the Entry, Exits and the Exodus:

  1. EntryGod is the author of our beginnings. When He opens a door, no one can close it. And when He closes it, no one can open it (Revelation 3:7). We don’t have to be anxious about a job opportunity, relationship or a prospective opening as it is the Lord who opens the door for us.  It is not the competitor, detractor or the devourer but God who controls the access to opportune openings. What God opens no man can shut.
  1. ExodusGod is our guide through the journey. I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you unto Myself (Exodus 19:4). As process determines the quality of end product, our piety and placidity will decide our destination. “The Only Constant in Life Is Change.”- Heraclitus. The generation that incredulously complained, lamented and bellowed about the change, did not reach their destination. God fashions us though the journey to fit into the door of the fabulous entry.
  1. ExitGod is the designer of our ends. “When the time’s ripe, I answer you (Isaiah 49:8). Puffing or pouting does not dictate our exits – God does. The Hebrew slaves were lurched out when it was time for them to exit. Every ending has a new beginning. Exist are God’s directions towards our destiny. When God shuts the door, no one can open it.

We might not be there yet with the problems that we are paddling through, but the God of entries, exits and the Exodus is with us.

Exodus 12:34 So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, you are the Master Planner and Designer of my life. Teach me to relish entries, exits and exodus through to my divine designation in placidity and serenity. Amen.
