04 May 2022 – Difficult Questions – Part 5

Mark 16:15 “But what about you?” He asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Almost at the end of His three years ministry, Jesus asked His disciples a very succinct question, “Who do you say I am?”. The disciples first discussed the reports of the common people who followed Jesus for a touch and His teachings. The people’s perspective varied from ‘Miracle Worker’ to ‘Rabbi’ (Teacher) to a ‘prophet’. However, Jesus was concerned about the understanding of His closest friends who ate, slept and followed Him for 3 years. While the others waited in silence Peter boldly confessed “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Mark 16:16). This was the rubicon moment for Peter that turned the impetuous disciple into an influential maverick. The rash and raspy follower became the radical powerful preacher and pioneer of Christendom.

For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks (Luke 6:45b). What we believe in our heart is what our mouth will confess, and what we confess is what we will become. Hence it is vital to ask ourselves this very important question. Who is Jesus to me? Is He my Saviour, Supplier or Shepherd? Is He my Miracle Worker, the Maker of Heaven and earth or is He my Messiah? If He is only a provider we will go to Him as frequently as we visit the bank or the ATM machine. If He is only our Miracle Worker, we will seek Him only when we want healing but if He is our Messiah, we will walk with Him 24/7 and He will make His dwelling in our hearts.

Who is Jesus to you?

1.     Maker: Creation screams about the Glory of God. Every blade of grass, every pretty petal, parrot and snowcap mountain peak magnifies the majesty and might of our God. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands (Psalm 91:1). Jesus is the maker of Heaven and earth.

2.     Miracle Worker: The miracle working hand of the Lord is vigorously active even today. Many seek Him only for miracles but when we are steeped in His presence miracles automatically unfold. Jesus worked many other miracles for His disciples, and not all of them are written in this book (John 20:30). The presence of Jesus permeates the miracle working power, so seek His presence not His power. Every moment with Jesus is miraculous.

  1. Messiah: Messiah literally means “the anointed one”. Acknowledging Jesus as our Messiah unlocks the supernatural treasures of the Heavenly kingdom. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19). Basking under the anointed one opens the supernatural power and potent to us.

Who is Christ the King to you?

Acts 5:42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Prayer: King Jesus, You are my Master and my Messiah. May I consciously be aware of your presence to adore and acknowledge you as my Messiah. Amen.
