07 May 2022 – God’s Golden Girls – Part 1

Exodus 2:1 Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.

An account of the birth of Moses introduces his parents as a Levi man and a Levite woman. It is only in chapter 6, in the chronological account of their family tree, they are named as Amram and Jochebed (Exodus 6:20). Very few names of women are listed in the Old Testament and Jochebed is one among the few. This heroine had two children, Miriam, about 10 years and Aaron, around three when the third baby was on the way. During her third trimester, there was a cruel decree from the Pharaoh – “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.” (Exodus 1:22). To the horror of the parents, their third child was a boy! As Jochebed held her newborn in her arms, her faith rose up within her and she decided not to become a victim of the verdict, Hence, she hid him for three months. (Exodus 2:2). However, her beautiful baby grew stronger and louder and when she could not hide him anymore, she weaved a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile (Exodus 2:3). Baby Moses did not swim through the River Nile! His mother strategically placed him among the reeds where the royalty would bathe.

Unable to witness the outcome of her plan, Jochebed got Miriam to watch the basket while she rushed back to her mud hut to stand on her knees to cry and pray for divine intervention. Pharaoh’s daughter could save or slaughter the child but God heard the prayers of the tenacious mother and the baby was adopted into the family of the Pharaoh. The tenacious mother played a vital role in God’s plan and became ‘God’s Golden Girl’.

Three qualities of a tenacious woman:

1.     Intentional: Tenacity is an attribute that we develop intentionally. No one is born tenacious but the perseverant accomplish Godly purpose to be listed as God’s heroes/heroines. The name Jochebed means “Jehovah is her glory.” “It isn’t the smartest, strongest or the best looking that succeed, it is the most tenacious. So, don’t give up”. – Christine FoordBe intentional to pursue the promises of God.

2.     Intelligence: An uneducated but God fearing slave girl became an intelligent strategic preserver of her son’s life because The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 7:1).  God gave her a brilliant idea to make a boat with a papyrus weed basket and coated it with tar and pitch. Intelligence follows the tenacious.

  1. Intrinsic: Moses became the great deliverer, prophet, pastor and the author of the law because of the silent heroine Jochebed who delivered him from the hands of the cruel Pharaoh. The value of a virtuous woman is far higher than precious jewelry. The intrinsic value of a tenacious woman is immeasurable.

Be a tenacious Golden Girl for God.

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, I may not be tough on the outside but make me tenacious on the inside to fulfill your purpose. Amen.
