25 May 2022 – Signs vs Superstitions – Part 5

Deuteronomy 18:10-14 Don’t try to learn what will happen in the future by talking to a fortuneteller or by going to a magician, a witch, or a sorcerer. Don’t let anyone try to put magic spells on other people. Don’t let any of your people become a medium or a wizard. And no one should try to talk with someone who has died. The Lord hates anyone who does these things.

‘Talking to the dead’ has a fancy name, ‘The Science of Necromancy’ and is listed as a popular television program or theatre entertainment in the modern world. In the ancient primordial times, medium and spiritists were sought to predict the future, however, the majority of the modern scientific generation engages with witches and warlocks out of curiosity and ignorance. The underlying desire of occult practices is to control the future. Modern day sorcerers shroud themselves as ‘psychics’. Psychics, mediums and spiritists have a thriving business in the underworld. It is no more the practice of the East. Even developed nations of the West have witches and warlocks who whisper into the ears of the people.

King Saul had expelled the spiritists and mediums according to the word of the Lord, yet during his last lap of his rebellious life, he sought a medium to predict the future for him. Saul consulted the dead as the living God refused to answer his prayers (1 Samuel 28:6). There are split views from Bible scholars about the ‘spirit of Samuel’ whom Saul spoke to. Some say he spoke to the spirit of Samuel but others say it was hallucination. However, it is imperative to note that Saul did not see the spirit of Samuel through a crystal ball. He only heard a voice reiterating the prophecy given by Samuel about him and his kingdom. The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David (1 Samuel 28:17). Consulting a medium only bolstered the curse that was already impending on Saul. Saul and all his sons were killed the following day.

The dangers of playing with necromancy:

1.     Petition: Do not pray or petition through the dead. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus who gave himself as a ransom for all people (1 Timothy 2:5). It is a sin to pray to the dead spirits or plead them to be our mediators.

2.     Predict: Do not seek the dead to predict your future. Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God (1 John 4:1). Familiar spirits that talk in the voice of a dead relative/friend is a demon impersonating the dead. Demons speak half the truth to deceive and destroy.

  1. Penance: Do not consult mediums. Seeking guidance from the dead brings punishment and curse on the future generations.  Should the living seek guidance from the dead? Look to God’s instructions and teachings! (Isaiah 8:19-20). Necromancy brings generational curse.

Stay away from dead deeds.

Leviticus 19:31 Don’t turn to psychics or mediums to get help. That will make you unclean. I am the LORD your God.

Prayer: Father God, may my ears always be open to your instructions and my eyes be guided by thy word. Amen.
