08 January 2022 – Confidence – Part 1

1 John 5:14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

Confidence is defined as the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something. Confidence is nothing but unshakable trust that God is bigger than our biggest problem. Spiritual confidence is the spine that helps us to stand strong and sturdy. Spiritual confidence is the energy that gives us the enthusiasm to move forward. Confidence is a supernatural force or power that operates inside out and helps us overcome doubt and discouragement. Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised (Hebrews 10:35-36). As the spine gives our body structure and support, confidence shapes our prayer and supports our convictions. As the spine gives the body flexibility and stability in movements, confidence gives us pliability and the ability to see beyond the present into the promised future.

Our faith is measured by the level of our confidence in the Lord when we face tough circumstances. Our confidence will echo in the way we speak. Even when God tested Abraham’s faith by instructing him to sacrifice his only son of old age, Isaac, as a burnt sacrifice, Abraham spoke with calm confidence.  And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.” (Genesis 22:5). The confidence of Abraham reverberated in faith that God will bring his son back from the dead even if he sacrifices him. In a burnt offering the entire animal was burnt on the altar. So Abraham was not only required to kill his son but also burn him. Abraham knew his God. Abraham believed God was able to bring Isaac back to life again (Hebrews 11:19).

Godly confidence is our spiritual spine:

1.     Substance: Our prayers will carry substance and subject matter only when we have spiritual confidence. If we don’t believe what we pray, then they will be only vain words that are split on the ground. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for (Hebrews 11:1a). It is our confidence in the Lord and His promises that form the substance of subject matter. Any prayer without the substance is ineffectual.

2.     Support: Spiritual confidence supports and structures our prayers. We will move from lamenting to claiming and standing on the promises when our spiritual confidence is sturdy. As Abraham confidently said that he will come down with his son after the sacrifice, our words will resound God’s goodness and might and not our inability and disability.

3.     Stamina: Confidence gives us the stamina to go on. Confidence not in our aptitude or affluence but in God’s authority gives us spiritual stamina.

Confidence makes our prayers bold and audacious.

Hebrews 10:35: Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.

Prayer:  Dear Jesus, there is nothing too hard for you. May my confidence never be hinged on my inability but in your ability. Amen
