Judges 2:11-12 Then Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served Baals. They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshipped various other gods of the people around them.
After Israelites settled in the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey, they forsook the Lord and His Laws. When the fear of the Lord eroded from the generations of Israel, there was moral decay, ethical degradation and political chaos. As the reverential fear of God faded away, gratitude, integrity and worship jaded in the nation. They did the very thing the Lord God had commanded them not to do. Idolatry, immorality, and revelry crept in as the fear of the Lord was absent.
The modern-day society is the same in a mega dimension. The meaning of the word ‘morality’ has been forgotten. A very large percentage of the society is godless. Furthermore, just they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done (Romans 1:28). We live in a generation who are battling with gender confusion, family dysfunction and lack of ethical foundation as there is no fear of God.
The callousness and arrogance of the Israelites moved them away from the favour of God. Whenever Israel went to fight the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as He had sworn to them. They were in great distress (Judges 2:15). There was drought, famine, defeat, violence and chao in the settlements of Israel! Absence of the fear of God in our world today is inviting plagues, pandemonium, and pestilence but God gets blamed for all disease, violence, and epidemic.
Godlessness is the cause of the disasters:
1. Idolatry: Materialism and greed for money is the idol of modern society. Money will chase those who fear God but the godless who does not fear God will chase after money. For the love of money is the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10a). Those who think more about how to accumulate wealth or pay their bills worship ‘the idol of money’ and lack the fear of God.
2. Immorality: Bible is the mandate for morality. The Bible is the mandate for marriage.Satisfying sensual desires outside marriage can never be justified as a need or a weakness. Moral decay is the mark of godlessness.
3. Revelry: Heart breaking statistics prove that churches are converted into pubs in the western world. Partying, merrymaking and gaiety is accepted as the culture of the young generation. Revelry is moving the current generation further and further away from the fear of God.
Lack of the fear of God is the cause of the natural disasters, hatred, violence and the pandemic.
Deuteronomy 28:20 The Lord will send the curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to.
Prayer: God my Father, may I inculcate the reverential fear in my family and in my future generation so we will never meander away from your favour and grace. Amen
