16 April 2023 – Because – Part 1

Genesis 26:12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him.

The word ‘because’ is a conjunction (connecting two clauses). ‘Because’ is used to express an explanation or reason. There is always a reason behind what God does and what He refrains from doing. Only if we understand the ‘because’ behind the event can we make sense of the episode. There was famine in the land. Now there was a famine in the land —besides the previous famine in Abraham’s time (Genesis 26:1). The land was dry and there was no rain to irrigate the crops. Ancient history records a drop in the population when there was famine. There was no support system to help them wade through famine. However, there was one farm that was blooming and flourishing even in the peak of the famine. It was the ranch of Isaac, the son of Abraham. There was rain and dew drenching his farmland. Isaac planted crops and his crops did not just survive but thrive. He reaped a hundredfold because the Lord blessed him.

Forbes, a global media company that focuses on business, investment, technology and entrepreneurship has announced that we are heading towards recession in 2023. ‘A recession is defined as a slowdown in economic activity that’s spread across all sectors of the economy and lasts for a significant period. It is normally preceded by inflation. However, we live in God’s economy as Isaac did. During the recession Isaac’s business and wealth grew because the Lord blessed him. Isaac’s business recorded a hundredfold profit while others were slumped in loss. God’s economy yields a hundredfold not 100%. 100% will double our investment ($1 will become $2) but 100 fold will turn $1 to $100. God will bless our efforts, ideas, time and investment and increase it hundredfold when we live in God’s economy.

Living in God’s economy:

1.     Rain: Living under God’s economy is making God our source. Our jobs, business, skills and aptitude are only means but God is our source. But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven (Deuteronomy 11:11). Living under God’s economy means the news of recession will not push us into depression. If our ‘means’ (job/business/income source) dries up, God will open others resources. We can never be made redundant; God will open a better and brighter position. We drink from the rain of heaven and not from the rivers of the earth.

2.     Radar: Living under God’s economy means to live under the radar of His protection and provision. The territory of Isaac received the seasonal rains and dew while the farmlands around him were dry. Living according to the precepts of God’s Word keeps us under the providence of God’s economy.

3.     Riches: Isaac was bountiful while others were impoverished because the Lord blessed him. We don’t have to go behind riches and wealth. Riches will follow those who follow Him.

Living under the divine radar of God’s Word will make us flourish even in recession.

Genesis 26:13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

Prayer: Father God, help me not to be terrified by the prediction of the economist but teach me to live under the radar of your divine economy. Amen
