26 May 2023 – Delight in the Lord – Part 6

Acts 13:22 “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will”.

David was an extraordinary hero both historically and spiritually. He became God’s delight and the man after God’s own heart as he was firm on doing God’s will. David sense-checked all his decisions and directions with the Lord. He delighted or greatly pleased the Lord that the Lord God made an eternal covenant with him. “The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom” (2 Samuel 7:11-12 & 16). The righteousness of David filtered and penetrated through the generations. God remembered David and kept the light of David’s family line burning. He raised a great, great, great grandson of David, Asa, to sit on the righteous throne of David. Nevertheless, for David’s sake the LORD his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem by raising up a son to succeed him and by making Jerusalem strong (1 Kings 15:4). The reward of those who delight the heart of God is passed on from generation to generation!

The flag of Israel still has the Star of David to commemorate their greatest King. David still remains as the unforgettable great leader of Israel. The prominence of David is still indelible in the memories of the people. David did not love the Lord for rewards but reward is the byproduct of serving and delighting the heart of God.

God delights in those who do His will:

1.     Resist: David resisted temptation to go after his fleshly desires (expect one) that derailed him from accomplishing God’s will. For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not failed to keep any of the LORD’s commands all the days of his life–except in the case of Uriah the Hittite (1 Kings 15:5). Resisting anything that distracts us from righteousness and destroys holiness will greatly please the Lord.

2.     Resilience: David was pliable, teachable and resilient. He fell but he picked himself and dragged himself back to the temple of the Lord to repent and lament about his sin. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God (Psalm 51:17b). Be resilient and malleable.

3.     Reward: We do not please or appease the Lord to receive rewards; divine rewards are the “returns on the investment of righteousness”. The reward is a perennial flow of favour not only on us but our generations to come. Jesus was called the “Son of David” about ten times in the Gospels. The reward for doing ‘the will of God’ and ‘delighting God’ is immeasurable. Righteousness is the greatest treasure we can leave for our offspring.

Righteousness delights the heart of God and the reward of righteousness is passed on from generation to generation.

2 Samuel 7:16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I submit and surrender to follow your will and your ways. Like my forefather King David I want to be your delight. Amen.
