11 July 2023 – Expectations – Part 3

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 ‘You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”

The Lord God expects us to ‘remember Him’ in all our promotions and progressions. Remember that it is the Lord God who gives us the power to produce wealth.  To ‘remember’ is to recollect and ruminate about someone or something. It is not a formal statement ‘by God’s grace I have achieved this’ but it is to be filled and overflow with gratitude to the ‘Giver of the gift’. Remember His wonderful deeds which He has done, His marvels and the judgments from His mouth (1 Chronicles 16:12). It is imperative to remember and return the glory to the Lord. ‘Power or promotion that is not returned back to the Lord turns into pride’.

The Lord warned the Israelites before He gave them the properties and possessions to remember it is His Mighty Powerful Hand that has blessed them and not their own smartness or skill set. Houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery (Deuteronomy 6:11-12). Everything that we own, possess and enjoy flow from the Lord God. Those who are obsessed with worldly blessings have drifted away from remembering that it is the Lord who has blessed them.

Only when we forget to see the grace of God that saved us, the mercy of God that forgave us and the goodness of God that is sustaining us, will we give room to flaunting and flouting.

God expects us to ‘remember Him’:

1.     Flaunt: Flaunting invites the demon of conceit and pride to reside with us. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow….Instead, you should say, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and carry out our plans” (James 4:15). We must be careful never to boast about our achievements, awards and accolades. Don’t flaunt about yourself, but brag about our Saviour.

2.     Frivolous: Remembering and testifying about the Lord must not be ‘frivolous’ but ‘serious’. Remembering and giving glory to God is not a prelude to be followed by our personal flaunting. God takes all the glory. There is no element of talent, IQ or smartness hidden behind our achievements. Don’t be frivolous but be serious in giving God the glory.

3.     Fastidious: The fulcrum of our progress rests on how fastidious we are in remembering God. See Him in the small and big blessings. Remember Him with gratitude for the obvious, visible and invisible blessings. Don’t be frivolous, be fastidious.

Remember, it is God who gives us the power to produce wealth and progress in all that we do.

Psalm 119:55 O Lord, I remember Your name in the night, And keep Your law.

Prayer: Father God, May I never be swayed away by the blessing but always be swelled with gratitude and appreciation that all good and perfect blessings come from You and You alone. Amen.
