22 August 2023 – Blessed – Part 3

Deuteronomy 28:7 The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.

Blessed is the man whose enemies flee before him. Blessedness is commonly understood as the ‘favour of God’. The favour of God will be so very evident in our lives that we will see the enemies wither away like autumn leaves while we flourish and thrive. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreads out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat comes, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit (Jeremiah 17:8). The scorching heat of evil plots, conniving plans and wicked coalition will not affect our fruitfulness or our fertility.  Blessedness is not a state where we will see no enemies or there will be no vicious attacks. It is a state where the belaboring adversary will tremble and take flight. It is when those who slandered and secluded us would try to get into our good books. When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him (Proverbs 16:7).

Isaac dwelt in the land of the Philistines and during famine the Lord blessed his ranch while the fields of the Philistines were dry in drought. This man was flourishing in recession while the economy was slumping in depression. He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him (Genesis 26:14). Hence they tried to assault his belongings and inflicted financial loss. The king of the Philistines banned Isaac from living in his territory. Isaac did not fight back nor did he quarrel with the troublemakers but the Lord blessed him everywhere he moved. Finally the king of the Philistines could not resist, but humbled himself before Isaac to sign a peace treaty with him. “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said, ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’ (Genesis 26:28).

Three pieces of evidence of being blessed by the Lord:

1.     Wistful: The wicked will become wistful for trying to harm and hurt us. It will be evident that God is on our side. As the Philistines did, God will make our enemies witness about us – “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you”. The enemy will become wistful and regretful.

2.     Wrongs: God will turn the wrongs into rights. The Philistines unjustly harmed Isaac by throwing dirt into his well. Isaac did not file a case nor did he vent his feelings on FaceBook. He just moved away from them. God will fight for those whom He has blessed.

3.     Wise: God will make us wiser than our enemies. The schemes of the enemy will be fooled.

The diabolical ghetto will be terrorized by those who are blessed by the Lord.

Psalm 119:97 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies.

Prayer: Father God, I will abide obediently under the shadow of your wings and witness my enemies tremble and flee. Amen.
