31 August 2023 – Eyes – Part 5

Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.

Eyes are the lamp to the brain and the body. Jesus said, ‘Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness (Luke 11:34–36).  The eyes feed the inner-man with information, images and imaginations. The brain perceives up to 80% of all impressions by sight.

Physical eyes take in light from the world around us and sends visual information to our brain to form images but the spiritual eyes take the light from the heart to visualize the world around us.

Sin entered this world as Eve refused to stop looking at the tempting forbidden fruit. She looked and kept on looking until it corrupted the mind to signal to the body to reach out, pluck it, and eat it. The serpent did not pluck it for Eve, she took it. The brain and body are filled with what the eyes are engaged in. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world (1 John 2:16-17). Lust of the flesh refers to immoral carnal desires, lust of the eyes to covetousness, greed and materialism and pride of life is contemptuous conceit. All three lusts are fed by the eyes. A survey conducted by Perry and Cyrus Schleifer found that people who start watching porn were more likely to split with their spouse. ‘What is seen cannot be unseen’. Filters of purity and piety will protect us from being lured into sin. Eyes are the gateway to the soul.

Eyes are the light to the soul:

1.     Information: Eyes convey information and enrich us with knowledge. However, the information that we elate ourselves with will energize our actions. Reading and watching the right material will enlighten our soul, but engaging in wrong, corrupt and impure information will darken our souls.

2.     Images: We process information in our brain by creating ‘visual imagery’. The brain creates pictures of what the eyes see and files them in the memory cabinet. Hence when we revisit an incident, the brain pulls out the visual images that it has created and replays them like a movie in our mind. Only the blood of Jesus can wipe out ugly memories. What is seen can be unseen with the divine detergent – the blood of Jesus.

3.     Interaction: The filters in our eyes will determine our interaction with the worldly lust and licentiousness. Be extremely cautious in opening the gate of your soul to interact with what can corrupt your holiness.

The eyes are the gateway to the soul that can both illuminate and darken our inner-man.

Job 31:1 I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.

Prayer: Father God, I surrender my eyes to be the source of light to my soul. Help me avoid second looks at the forbidden fruit.  Amen.
