26 April 2024 – The Three Ms – Part 5

Psalm 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!

“You don’t have a soul, You are a soul, You have a body”-C.S Lewis

The soul or our personality and character and the soul must be led by the Holy Spirit. When the soul listens to the carnal desires of the body, then the soul will be misdirected. The soul that heeds to the direction of the Holy Spirit will walk fearlessly in holiness and integrity.

David talks to his soul and says, ‘Hey soul, Praise the Lord from your inmost being’. He is giving instructions to his soul to sing praises from the gut and not just from the mouth. He probably felt that his soul was not praising and thanking the Lord enough. Maybe his soul was ‘asking’ more than ‘adoring’. He felt the lack of praise within him. He did not want to praise with his mouth but from the depth of his being. Self-talk or soul-talk will determine our moods and direct the words of our mouth.

People say that they are irritated or agitated because they got up on the wrong side of the bed. Our self-talk to the soul in the early hours of the day sets the stage and the mood for the rest of the day. If we wake up in the morning and say, “This is the day that the Lord has made, oh soul, let us rejoice and be glad in it”, joy will fill our hearts and praise will overflow from our mouth.

Self-talk directs our Mind, Mood, Mouth and Morality:

1.         Irritated: When flustered, frustrated and irritated, we must instruct our soul to be quiet; ‘Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him’ (Psalm 62:5). Talking to our soul helps our thoughts to focus on the might of our God and not be fixated on our mess. Talk yourself out of moodiness.

2.         Infuriated: Vexation and exasperation is the result of impatience. Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! (Psalm 27:14). Instructing the soul to wait for God’s timing as He is never late will calm down the agitated and infuriated soul.

3.         Insinuated: Evil foreboding insinuates imaginary fear and fret. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! (Psalm 37:7). Direct the soul to be still and not to be fearful about the unknown future.

Speak to your soul every morning to be subjected to the Holy Spirit and not to the feelings, mood swings and fears.

Psalm 42:1-2 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, teach me not to be dragged by my emotions and feelings but to direct my soul to rest, rejoice and respite on you. Amen.
