03 August 2024 – The Well – Part 6

John 4:6-7 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”

Jesus who was exhausted from the journey sat down by Jacob’s well. Jesus and His disciples were passing through a town called Sychar in Samaria. Sychar does not exist anymore but archeologists identify Tel Balata as the ancient Sychar city of Samaria. Shechem which later became Sychar was the place where Jacob settled down with his family and flock. For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent (Genesis 33:19). The first important task for ancient settlers would be to find waterspouts and build wells, so Jacob would have found a spring and built a well in Shechem. Jesus met the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. Jesus chose to sit down by the well just to meet and converse with a woman who was spiritually thirsty that could not be quenched by men, money or materialism.

There are different techniques to study the Bible. There are verbal and visual methods but the in-depth study of the bible should include relational, reflective, logical, practical, musical, and allegorical learning. Jesus the “Well of Living Waters” chose to sit next to the well to converse with a woman who was parched spiritually. She came to draw water from a well that would dry up in the scorching heat of the summer but Jesus is the “Well of Living Waters” whose waters will never dry.

Drinking salty water will never quench our thirst as the human kidneys need more water to flush away the excess salt that we have consumed. Running after people, possessions or petty pleasures is like drinking salty water. The more you drink the salty water the more you will thirst! But Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:25b). When we drink from the living waters we will thirst no more.

Jesus is the Well of Living Waters – Drink from Him:

1.         Salty: Salty sea water will make us thirstier. Similarly, worldliness will leave us dehydrated and depressed. Seeking satisfaction in success or substance is like drinking salty water.

2.         Sugary: Sugary drinks are absorbed by our blood more quickly and overworks the pancreas and liver. Sugary drinks are positions and power that feed the ego and do not quench thirst.

3.         Sweet: Sweet water is just plain, pure and fresh water. Jesus is the well of the sweet fresh ‘Living Water’ that can revive our spirit, rejuvenate our soul and restitute our body.

Jesus is the Well of Living Water who will quench our thirst. His Word is the sweet revitalizing water that will satisfy our thirsty soul.

John 4:14a “But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.”

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, I will run to you for a refreshing drink from the Living Well to drink the Living Water from your Living Word. Amen.
