Mark 5:8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you impure spirit!”
Miracles manifest the grace of God and His mercy opens the door to His miracle working power. It is not our goodness, godliness or generosity but the ‘mercy’ of God that draws His compassion towards our brokenness and bondages. Miraculous signs are a true reflection of the heart of God. He saves, delivers and sets us free because of His compassion and mercy.
The attention of Jesus was drawn towards a man who was cutting himself with stones and crying alone in the graveyard. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones (vs 5). The demonic spirit had struck him with psychosis. His mind was demented and he was violent. He tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet (vs 4). Jesus went looking for a man whom the world had abandoned. Every miracle recorded in the Bible is slathered with God’s love and mercy. No one is qualified to receive miracles. It is only the mercy of God that invades and showers us with the power of God. However, spiritual gifts without a fruitful lifestyle are futile. Compassion is the key to receiving and operating in the ‘Power Gifts’ (faith, healings, and the working of miracles).
No one can boast that it was their godliness, piety or prayer life that brought healing, salvation and miraculous signs in their life. The demon possessed man did nothing to deserve the visitation of Jesus. Jesus travelled across the Lake of Galilee to set free the man wailing in the tomb. This man was delivered from bondage and generational curses. The touch of Jesus renewed his mind, reset his emotions and rewired his cognitive thinking.
The Mercy of God works Miracles:
1. Mercy: We who have received mercy must overflow with the fruits of compassion, forgiveness and mercy. To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8b). Gift of miraculous signs without the mercy and compassion of Jesus will only look like mystical magic to the world.
2. Miracle: Miraculous signs are God’s love language. Mercy that is showered on us, who are unworthy, manifest as miracles in the physical realm and body.
3. Ministry: The deliverance of the demon possessed man after his encounter with Jesus became his ministry. Jesus said to the delivered man, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you” (vs 19). The mercy of God and our miraculous experiences shape our calling and ministry.
Miraculous signs, wonders and healing will touch the broken world with God’s love and mercy.
Spiritual gifts without fruits are dangerous and fruits without gifts are powerless.
Acts 5:12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people, and with one accord the believers gathered together in Solomon’s Colonnade.
Prayer: Precious Lord, Help me to be your hands and feet to show your love and mercy through my words and deeds to the broken world. Amen.
