18 November 2024 – Pray in the Spirit – Part 1

Ephesians 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

About 49% of the world’s population prays every day but most ritualistic, religious and repetitive prayers do not even get past their roof. Prayers remain unanswered as there is no “heart-mind coordination”. Praying in the Spirit simply means praying with the Holy Spirit. It means to align, agree and pray along with the Holy Spirit. Praying in the Spirit is not just speaking in tongues but understanding God’s thoughts, (the truth on any issue), and praying the will of God.

Is it possible to understand the thoughts or the will or the mind of God when we pray? If yes, how do we pray in the Spirit? What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us (1 Corinthians 2:12).   The spirit of man refers to our heart and the soul of man, our mind. The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, resides in the spirit of man. The mind/soul is the seat of our emotions. If our prayers are emotionally driven, then there will be no agreement between the Spirit of God and our soul/emotions. Frustrated, flustered or frantic prayers are emotional prayers and not prayers from our spirit.

We need emotions to aid our prayers to express our feelings but emotions should not drive our prayers. Our soul/emotions must be surrendered to the Spirit of God who dwells in our heart. Calm down the fear and foreboding and listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit to align, agree and pray along with Him. Be in the mode of prayer 24/7.

Pray in the Spirit:

1.         Align: Emotional prayers are desperate prayers. If our mind is anxious, afraid and apprehensive our thoughts will be clouded and discombobulated. Calm the emotions and listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit before praying frantically about the situation.

2.         Agree: Agree with the truth. Truth is God’s perspective on the matter. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:14). When the emotions urge us to pray for the downfall or destruction of the offenders, the Holy Spirit will nudge us to bless them and forgive them. Agree with the Holy Spirit.

3.         Along: Those who are led by the Spirit will pray on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and petitions, for all needs and all people but above all, they will be alert to His voice and always pray along with the Holy Spirit.

Emotions can only aid our prayers but should not control our prayers; pray from the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:16 “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to understand the mind of God and pray in alignment and in agreement along with you in the spirit. Amen.
