Ephesians 6:18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.
Praying in the Spirit is a conversation with the Holy Spirit. ‘Listen more and talk less.’ It is a process of taking our inhibitions, insinuations and intimidations continuously to the Lord and waiting for Him to ignite and inspire us with faith. Praying in the Spirit is never a monologue where we take our complaints, needs and fears to Him; it is a dialogue.
Those who pray in the Spirit will be clothed with the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Paul the Apostle was in a prison ship on the way to Rome when the ship was caught in a devastating hurricane. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved (Acts 27:20). However, there was one man who was bolstered with hope in the most hopeless hurricane. The Apostle Paul stood up to the fainting throng and spoke life into the lifeless souls. Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul (vs 23-24a). Paul who was praying in the Spirit 24/7 was able to see through his eyes of faith as he heard the voice of the Holy Spirit guiding him through the dark dangerous valley of the shadow of death.
When threatened, distressed or disillusioned, connect in the Spirit and listen to the Holy Spirit. We don’t have to repeat all that is happening to us. Nothing is hidden from the Lord. When we quieten our spirit to listen to Him, we will be sucked into the prayer cubicle of God’s presence. He will speak to you with a phrase or a promise. We can pray in the spirit even when we are surrounded by people, if we reside in the prayer cubicle of God’s presence.
Pray in the Spirit:
1. Intimidating: Run into your prayer cubicle and pray when you are intimidated. When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me? (Psalm 56:3-4).
2. Intruding: Run into the bubble of your prayer cubicle when the enemy is intruding into your life. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance (Psalm 32:4-7). He will give you a song of deliverance.
3. Interrupting: Run into the prayer cubicle when you are interrupted with qualms and questions. Evil forebodings are the devil’s devices to interrupt our continuous connection with the Lord in prayer.
Those who pray in the spirit will not be downtrodden or discouraged as they hear from the Holy Spirit and are encouraged and inspired.
Acts 27:25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, Teach me to tune-in and listen to your still small voice when I am intimidated and insinuated. Amen.
