25 November 2024 – Freedom – Part 1

Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

The concept of freedom has been largely misunderstood as the right to do whatever we want. True freedom is not doing whatever we want to do but choosing to do what is right, pure and holy. Freedom is the byproduct of righteous living. Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the LORD, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you (Hosea 10:12). Unbridled feelings will lead to enslaving habits and addictions, not freedom. We will become slaves to what we idolize. Our jobs, children or money, if idolized, can enslave us. Sinful habits make us slaves to satan and his satanic traps. “You are slaves of the one whom you obey either of sin which leads to death or obedience, which leads to righteousness” (Romans 6:16). Freedom is only found in Christ Jesus. Jesus died to set us free from enslaving sin, sickness and shame.

Enticing feelings follow the desire of the flesh. Carnal desires will give us momentary pleasures ignoring the long term pain. The box of donuts that tastes sweet in the mouth turns into sugary-poison in our gut. Similarly, sin that gives instant gratification is the deadly poison that leads to eternal darkness.

Sin is willful/known disobedience. Transgression is repeating the sin over and over again. Repeated rebellious transgression that hurts and violates the rights of others is iniquity. Iniquity becomes a generational curse with accumulated interest! A curse can be best understood as an iron chain around our legs that stops progress and keeps us incarcerated to the past sin. Only the Son of God who took the crown of thorns on His head to cancel our curses can revoke and annul its consequences. We don’t have to carry the stains of sins or generational curses as Jesus nailed our sins and cancelled our curses on the cross of Calvary.

True Freedom is in Christ Jesus:

1.         Sin: Our actions have consequences. What is done cannot be undone but the cycle of repetition can be broken by the blood of Jesus. True freedom can be enjoyed when the burden of guilt and the cycle of sinful habits are completely broken. Blood of Jesus gives us emotional freedom.

2.         Sickness: There is healing for all our sickness and disease under the blood covenant of the cross. The blood of Jesus is the antidote to physical freedom, sickness and illness.

3.         Shame: Shame is a cousin of guilt and condemnation. Shame causes mental disorders such as social phobia, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders or psychosis. Jesus and the blood of Calvary is the only antidote to stigmatizing shame.

Freedom is not doing what we feel and want. Our feelings are very deceptive and will lead us to the rut of enslaving sinful habits.

True freedom is in choosing a righteous lifestyle.

John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, set me free from enslaving sinful habits and wants. Cleanse my desires, needs and wants and enable me to enjoy true freedom in you and with you. Amen.
