1 Kings 7:21 “And he set up the pillars in the porch of the temple: and he set up the right pillar, and called the name thereof Jachin: and he set up the left pillar, and called the name thereof Boaz”.
There were two notable bronze pillars that stood in the entrance of Solomon’s temple – “Jachin and Boaz”. Jachin means “firm, upright, or stable” and Boaz means “power or might”. These pillars were not hidden but were in the vestibule of the temple. They were thirty-five feet tall, with a circumference of eighteen feet. The pillars were made out of the bronze that David took plunder from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadadezer (1 Chronicle 18:8).
Unlike hidden reinforcing pillars that are behind the walls, pillars on the porch were the symbolic representation of strength and power. It showed that the pillars provided structural support to the palatial temple. We are called to be like Jachin and Boaz in God’s Kingdom. Spiritually we stand at the entrance of God’s house to reaffirm the power and might of the Lord God. Huram set the pillars at the entrance of the Temple, one toward the south and one toward the north.
We need pillars in our spiritual journey and we must become pillars to others, in this journey of life. When Moses was interceding and fighting on his knees, his hands were tired. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset (Exodus 17:12). In spiritual warfare, we might get weary, which is when we need Jachin and Boaz to uphold and strengthen us. Moses didn’t stop praying, but his helpers stood along with Him to pray, intercede and fight the battle.
Become pillars of stability and strength.
Pillars at the Porch:
1. Stability: To accomplish God’s will and God’s purpose we need stability and endurance. It will never be easy to fulfill God’s will and God’s purpose in our life. We must be firm, upright and stable like Jachin in our faith. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised (Hebrews 10:36).
2. Strength: To fulfill our purpose on earth we must remain strong during storms. “If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small” (Proverbs 24:10). Our strength will be tested when we are battered from all sides. Be the pillar of Boaz and be still in the presence of the Lord.
3. Solidity: The solidity in our faith, godly values and beliefs will make us firm, tough and durable. Be like Jachin and Boaz, the pillars of solidity.
While Moses stood as the intercessory pillar between God and the people, he had two sincere friends who stood with him like Jachin and Boaz. Be the intercessory pillar and become Jachin and Boaz to others.
Psalm 62:2 Truly He is my rock and my salvation.
Prayer: Father God, may I become like Jachin and Boaz, strong and sturdy; powerful and potent. Amen.
