2 Samuel 11:27 After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.
Misuse of authority displeases the Lord. Authority and influence of any capacity must be used with caution and reverence to the Lord. Spiritual, emotional or political influence when misused will turn into a curse as it hurts the heart of God. King David was and is still the greatest king of Israel however, the misuse of his political and authoritative power in taking Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah to be his wife, displeased the Lord. He abused his power to plot the murder of her husband and covered his mistake under “strategic battle move”. David thought that he had acted wisely to hide his lustful encounter but the thing David had done displeased the Lord. David repented and relented for his mistake but the stain of sin remains in his records as a reminder for you and me. For David had done what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not failed to keep any of the Lord’s commands all the days of his life—except in the case of Uriah the Hittite (1 Kings 15;5).
God views misuse of authority and abuse of power very seriously. God’s eyes will not miss when the innocent and the vulnerable are hurt, ill-treated and abused. Misuse of personal relationships and emotional manipulation of parents on their children or children on the parents is also detestable to the Lord. The actions of the spiritual and political leader David brought curse upon himself.
Misuse of authority displeases Him:
1. Influence: Using influence to push our agenda is an abomination to the Lord. It is an abomination to kings to do evil (Proverbs 16:12). Misuse and manipulation will become a curse.
2. Idolatry: Control and manipulation to enforce our views will not instill good values. Emotional control and manipulation is like idolatry before the Lord (1 Samuel 15:23b).
3. Impurity: David used his political power to erase his lustful greed but his infected, impure and sinful soul stood convicted before the Lord.
The Lord condemns misuse of power.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me to be careful not to misuse my influence but to respond in reverence to you. Amen.
