Revelation 3:8 “I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut. I know that you have little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name”.
This promise was given to the church of Philadelphia which is now situated in Turkey. The name of its modern city is Alasehir. It is a small town with about 40,000 people. Even back then when Jesus wrote a personalized letter to the seven churches, the church of Philadelphia was the smallest of all seven. This is why Jesus said that they had “little power”. The ‘little’ referred to the muscle, and the influence that this church had on the society, yet they were commended for their obedience, faithfulness and integrity.
Open doors are Biblical metaphors for opportunities, ventures or blessings. Closed doors on the contrary are a barrier to progress. The application of this verse is for God’s children is that doors of blessings and opportunities will open to all those who are subservient to God’s Word. The key to unlocking the closed doors of our lives is “obedience”.
During Paul’s journey to Rome, there was another shipwreck and Paul, the crew, and the prisoners landed on the Island of Malta. God opened a door of escape for them. The islanders showed us unusual kindness (Acts 28:2). Not long after, a viper bit Paul, but he shook it into the fire and he suffered no harm. The islanders considered snake bites as a punishment from god but were stunned that the venom did not kill Paul hence concluded that Paul must be a small ‘g’ god! However, this miracle opened a door for a ministry for Paul in the Island of Malta (vs 7-10). When they left the Island, they honoured them in many ways.
The Divine Open Door:
1. Opportunity: Divine ministry, relationships, or financial opportunities will open for those who walk in obedience.
2. Opulence: The islanders lavished Paul with the supplies for the journey (vs 10b). The divine open will make you opulent.
3. Overcome: The divine door of provision helped Paul to overcome the losses from the shipwreck.
The key to the divine open door is obedience.
Prayer: Father in Heaven, I submit to be obedient to your Word to enjoy the blessings of open doors. Amen.
