19 July 2025 – Guard Your Heart – Part 4

Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Normal heart rates for adults range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Low heart rate can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fatigue. Measuring the heart rate is a quick and important vital sign to assess our overall health. Slow heart rate can be caused by heart damage, thyroid issues, medications, and certain medical conditions.

Our spiritual heart also has a heart rate that will determine our overall spiritual health. Doubt and desperation can slowdown our spiritual heart rate and drop our spiritual pulse rate. Protect your spiritual heart from doubt, disbelief and desperation. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord (James 1:6-7). Doubt will make us like the waves that foam and roam aimlessly without a vision or destination. See, waves are very active; they are not idle. Similarly, a person who is unable to believe in God and His promises will be tossed around by doubt. They will be hyperactive or overenthusiastic but will never reach their desired destination. Doubt will leave them disappointed.

The Israelites who left Egypt never reached their destination but were tossed around in the wilderness as they did not believe in God. Doubt made them defiant and left them as roaming nomads in the desert. So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief (Hebrews 3:19). Doubt and disbelief will keep us from inheriting and enjoying God’s best for us.

Guard Your Heart from Doubt:

1.             Doubt: Doubt is distrust and disbelief in the Power of God. Victory in Christ Jesus is not just a promise to be fulfilled but it is a promise that has already been fulfilled.

2.             Desperation: Doubt will make us desperate, frantic and disoriented.

3.             Double-Minded: Doubt will make us unstable. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do (vs 8).

Guard your heart from doubt, desperation and double-mindedness.

Doubt will slow down the rhythm of our spiritual heart rate. Trust and rest.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, I will defeat doubt by confessing, professing and believing in your word. Help me to protect my heart from doubt and desperation. Amen.
