Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it,”
The Heart Foundation gives us various tips to protect our heart. Balanced diet, physical activity, weight management, stress management, good sleep, quitting smoking and drinking are some recommendations. High blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, inactivity, obesity, diabetes, excessive stress and other unhealthy habits are harmful to the heart.
The same analogy applies to our spiritual heart as well. As good control over our diet is essential for a healthy heart, a tight control over our mind and mouth will keep our spiritual heart healthy and hearty. Watch over what your mind mulls and meditates on, and bridle your tongue. What we think and talk can protect or hurt the heart. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). Thoughts that become words affect our spiritual heart and our lifestyle.
Hence, it is important to protect the heart from prideful boasts, fearful blabbering and angry blurting. Defeat the ugly thoughts in the mind before they deposit as fat, sugars or salt. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Demolish the argument, offence and anger that lifts up its ugly head against your spouse, sibling or your superior. Check if the mind is ruminating on any prideful notions; stop any fearful deliberations and antagonistic contemplations that surges and take captive of every thought. As soon as we capture an unwholesome thought, we must overlay God’s Word and wisdom on it to defeat and demolish the toxic thoughts.
Guard Your Heart:
1. Fat: Food with high fat content builds up plaque in the arteries narrowing the blood vessels causing heart attacks. The cholesterol of the spiritual heart is pride. Pride is the fat that can cause a spiritual heart attack and kill our faith.
2. Fear: Chronic stress increases the risk of heart disease and so does fear. Fear contaminates our faith and damages our spiritual heart.
3. Fury: Uncontrolled high blood pressure will weaken the heart similarly; anger and antagonism will weaken our spiritual heart.
Capture every thought and bring it under the obedience of Jesus Christ.
Guard your heart.
Prayer: Dearest Holy Spirit, I need your help to guard my heart to be healthy and whole. Amen.
