Psalm 121:1-2 I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
“Jesus HELP! —the shortest, yet one of the most powerful prayers we can pray.”
The helpline dial to heaven is “Jesus Help”. Trusting in man, money or mastery in times of need is foolishness. Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing (Proverbs 11:7). Jesus is our unshakable source of security at all times.
Ezra was a scribe who returned from the captivity of Babylon and led a group of Israelites back to Jerusalem. The Lord God had given Ezra favour in the sight of the king, and King Artaxerxe had provided from the royal treasury, gold, silver and provisions to rebuild the temple. The Bible records the inventory or ‘Stock on Hand’ that Ezra carried back to Jerusalem as 5400 articles (approximately 4 tons) of gold and silver. The journey from Babylon to Jerusalem was about 900 miles. There were no highways. They were prone to the attack of bandits and marauders in the wilderness. Instead of turning to the king for military protection, Ezra and the entourage fasted and prayed and sought angelic protection for their journey. I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and He answered our prayer (Ezra 8:22-23).
Our help comes from heaven. At times God might use human hands to complete a transaction but ‘the Giver’ is the Lord God Himself. When a need arises, turn heavenward in fasting and prayer for protection and provision.
Help:
1. People: Help does not come from people. God might use mortals, but He is the source of all blessings.
2. Power: The power of mortals can vanish in minutes – all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
3. Promise: The Lord has esteemed His Word above everything. So, the faith-formula based on God’s promises can never fail.
When a need arises, turn heavenward.
Prayer: Dearest Holy Spirit, turn my attention heavenward from where comes my help. Amen.
