25 January 2026 – The Blessed – Part 4

Genesis 12:2-3 “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

Abrahamic blessing is a covenant that the Lord made with Abraham to make him powerful, prosperous and prolific. Abraham was the first individual who was explicitly blessed to become a great nation. He was blessed with fame, fortune and fruitfulness. The blessing includes divine protection. Those who curse Abraham’s generation will be cursed by the Lord. He was blessed to become a blessing to all the peoples of nations. This profound blessing of prosperity, posterity and power was a reward to the obedience of Abraham.

The reward of obedience is beyond measure.

‘Obedience’ is to accept God’s command as the absolute truth with no “ifs” or “buts”. Obedience has no excuse, options or regrets. Obedience impresses God and inundates us with divine favour. The Lord God called the wealthy merchant who had a thriving family business of crafting and selling idols to leave his prospects, property and community to follow Him. Abraham obeyed.

Abraham did not have the written word, the Bible.  He had no pastors, prophets or churches to authenticate his calling. He only heard God, probably in the cool of the day when he went on his walks. He recognized God’s voice and obeyed. Implicit obedience is very rewarding. The Lord God has a divine sense of humor! When Abraham was old, barren, and childless, God promised him a nation. Abraham followed a God whom He didn’t know, to an unknown place and to an unseen destination. The obedience of Abraham not only made him a great nation but also a tremendously blessed and an influential and wealthy Patriarch.

Obedience blesses us beyond measure:

  1. Profitable: Obedience chooses God’s presence than profitable opportunities. (Eg: Choosing Sunday worship over double-paid shift).
  2. Pleasurable: Obedience chooses priorities over pleasure. (Eg: Prayer over party).
  3. Permissible: Obedience chooses purity over permissible gratifications. (Eg: Faithfulness over fun; intimacy with Him over indulgence).

Obedience is the expression of love to the Saviour who gave Himself for us.

Obedience rewards us with power, promotion and prosperity.

Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, give me an obedient spirit to inherit Abrahamic blessing. Amen.
