Romans 12:14: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.”
“Our mouth must be hooked to our heart and not our head.”
Neurobiological evidence indicates that physical pain and emotional distress share a common neural network in the brain. The brain uses many of the same areas to process physical pain and emotional pain. The emotional pain that we go through comes out as hurtful words and expressions. Words express the pain in the soul. An emotional or a spiritual abuse is expressed as exasperation and curses. However, Jesus reiterated that our mouth should not be hooked to our head but our heart. The mouth will curse if it is connected to its emotions but our tongue will bless when it is attached to the heart. In the heart reside faith, truth and the Word of God. Feelings will make the mouth explode in anger whereas faith will respond with grace and forgiveness.
Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem to submit Himself as the sacrificial lamb without blemish and spot on the cross. They had to pass through Samaria, but the Samaritans were hostile and refused to offer Jesus and His disciples’ hospitality. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them (Luke 9:54-55). The immediate reaction to insult, maltreatment or bigotry was anger and judgment. However, Jesus rebuked the disciples for their judgmental suggestion. He will also rebuke us when we curse those who persecute us.
Blessing instead of cursing will turn the table around. Bridle on our tongue will increase the anointing, mercy and grace.
Blessing vs Cursing:
- Ricochet: When we bless instead of curse the evil that was chanted against us returns back to the sender (Deuteronomy 28:7).
- Repentance: Blessing instead of cursing is the gospel message that brings repentance. The centurion who witnessed Jesus on the cross confessed, “Truly this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54).
- Receive: The tongue is the conduit of all blessings. From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things (Proverbs 13:2). Blessings flow from the lips to the lap. Bless those who hurt you, bless your family, bless your future and receive from God.
Bless and do not curse the offender.
Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, help my mouth to only bless and never curse. Amen.
