04 March 2026 – The Heart – Part 7

Proverbs 16:21 The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction.

A wise heart is prudent and discerning. The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction (Proverbs 16:23). Wisdom flows from the heart not the head. Wisdom speaks life but foolishness speaks gloom and doom. Self proclaimed curses and negative confessions are the words of a fool. Wisdom is walking in obedience to God’s commands and instructions. A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right (Ecclesiastes 10:2). “Knowledge is ‘knowing what is right’; wisdom is choosing to do ‘what is right’”.

We acquire wisdom by making the right choices. Choosing to be obedient, choosing right over wrong, choosing to bridle our tongue, choosing to study the word of God diligently, makes us wise. Wisdom must be intentionally acquired. King Solomon was the wisest man on earth but the Lord gave him a “heart of understanding”. God appeared to Solomon in a dream and gave him a blank cheque – God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you” (1 Kings 3:5). Solomon did not ask for long life, wealth or destruction of his enemies but asked the Lord for a discerning heart to distinguish right from wrong. So, the Lord granted him what he wanted and also showered him with favour, fortune and fame. Solomon’s right choice made him wise.

Storing God’s Word in our heart through meditation empowers us with wisdom, prudence and understanding.

Wise Heart:

  1. Sensible: Wise heart is prudent and cautious. Wisdom guides us to choose our words and our ways in alignment with God’s Word. Prudence is divine impressions of caution in our heart when we walk into unknown territory and make important relational, social or financial decisions.
  2. Sensitive: Wise heart is sensitive to right and wrong. A wise and understanding heart prioritizes prayer over pleasure. Wisdom directs, instructs and corrects us to walk in obedience.
  3. Selective: Wisdom gives us the discernment to be selective in our friendships, fellowships and partnerships. A wise heart will teach us that what we sow today will be our harvest tomorrow. Sow your time, money and energy wisely.

Intentionally acquire wisdom.

Choose obedience over obligation and desire wisdom over wealth.

Prayer: Father God, teach me to distinguish right from wrong and to sow righteousness to reap a ripe harvest of health, prosperity and honour.  Amen.
