24 March 2026 – Why David? – Part 6

Acts 13:22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

David was ‘God’s go-to man’ – “A man after God’s own heart”.

David had a heart to build God’s kingdom. He said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent” (2 Samuel 7:2). This was a poignant statement from David that revealed his heart. However, God did not permit him to build the temple. Building projects were not assigned to David but to his son Solomon. Though his earnest desire was rejected, David accumulated wealth and resources for his son to build a palatial magnificent temple for the Lord. David did not want his name on the foundation stone of the temple – he wanted it encrypted in heaven.

Bible scholars estimate that David amassed about 20 billion worth of gold, silver, iron, brass, timber and stone. From his personal wealth he gave roughly 100,000 talents of gold (approx. 3,400–5,000 tons) and 1,000,000 talents of silver (approx. 34,000–40,000 tons) (1 Chronicles 22:14&29:4-7). Bronze was too heavy to be weighed. David lavished his love for the Lord by his extravagant giving. It touched the heart of God as it was not done for name or fame. The temple was called “Solomon’s Temple” not David’s, even though it was funded by him. The only thing that David cared about was to move the Ark of the Lord into a permanent resting place.

God looks at the intent of the heart in our giving and our generosity

Become God’s “Go-to man/woman”:

  1. Fame: There was no showy singing in David. David did not ‘give-to-gain fame’ for himself. He sang and served God from his heart. To touch the heart of God we must love and serve him faithfully and sincerely.
  2. Fortune: Our treasures in heaven will be accredited based on love and not lavishness. God sees beyond the hand into the heart. God measured him by his faithfulness and not his fortune.
  3. Favour: David’s genuine love gained the favour of heaven.

God looks at ‘why’ and not ‘what’ we give.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me to be sincere, true and faithful in all my ways.  Amen.
