John 11:39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.”
Scientific reasoning will destroy scriptural reassurance. The power of God cannot be explained by science but science can be fully understood only in the light of the scriptures. While medical miracles cannot be understood by science, the creative power that raises the dead, creates body parts, rewires the brain and resuscitates life, will enthuse us if we understand the anatomy of the human body with divine enlightenment.
It was a Jewish belief that the spirit of a dead person lingers on for three days but on the fourth day all hope of resurrection is gone. The body had started decaying and decomposing. When a person dies, the heart stops pumping, hence there is no oxygen to the brain and the organs. Brain cells die within minutes and the tissue starts decomposing. When circulation stops, blood clots, blood vessels rupture and leak. Not sure if Martha had the scientific knowledge about a dead body but she knew that her brother’s body would have started rotting. Hence, she said, “by this time there is a bad odor”. This was a silly challenge to the Creator of the World.
When Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (vs 43), the heart that was frozen like a stone woke up and started pumping, the body became warm with fresh flow of oxygen, the blood loosened and started flowing, the tissues and organs that were decaying were replaced with new ones! Lazarus came out with a new brain, bowels and body! He must have been much healthier after resurrection as he received new body parts when Jesus called him back to life.
We serve a God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did (Romans 4:17).
Suggestive Questions:
- Scientific: God does not need our scientific knowledge; He is the Lord of science.
- Suggestive: He does not need our intellectual suggestions; He only looks for our faith.
- Stressful: God gives life to the dead dreams, relationships and bodies. He does not stress about our situation.
“Creator God does not need our suggestive questions and remarks.”
Prayer: God of Resurrection and Life, help me to trust in your creative power. Amen.
