15 July 2026 – Rewards – Part 7

Genesis 15:1 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”

“God rewards those who seek Him diligently.”

Reward is a special benefit given for obedience, effort and achievement but “great reward” emphasizes the magnitude, value, or significance of that reward. While rewards are awarded for achievements, great rewards are endowed on astounding accomplishments. Abraham was eligible for not just rewards but great rewards as his response to the situation in the previous chapter 14, pleased the Lord greatly.

The promise starts with the words, “After this”.  Sodom and Gomorrah, the land that Abraham’s nephew chose to live in, was invaded and ransacked by enemies. Lot and his possession had been carried away by the captives and a man who escaped came and reported this to Abraham. When Abraham heard about the tragedy, he immediately took 318 of his trained able-bodied men and pursued the enemy. He not only routed them but also recovered all the goods, people and possessions. Abraham not only rescued his nephew but also brought all others who were taken captive. When the king of Sodom said, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself” (vs 21), Abraham refused monetary recompense from the King of Sodom. I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich’ (vs 23). Abraham did not look for human recognition or reward which made him eligible for God’s great reward.

The response of Abraham pleased God greatly. The Lord God brought a healthy offspring from the body of Abraham that was as good as dead and Sarah’s womb that was also dead as a great reward for Abraham’s faithfulness. Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

Faith in God, faithfulness to people and fervent fellowship qualify us for great rewards.

Great Rewards:

  1. Fidelity: Loyalty and reliability toward people attract great rewards.
  2. Faithful: Truthfulness and honesty in our actions qualify us for great rewards.
  3. Fellowship: Reverential fear and fellowship with God endow us with great rewards.

“Fidelity, faithfulness and fellowship qualify us for great rewards.”

Prayer: Sovereign Lord, I will remain truthful, faithful and fervent to live a life of fruitfulness. Amen.
