Romans 15:4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
Research confirms that spaced-out repetition of something 5-7 times aids in “Memory Consolidation”. Memory consolidation is the process of the brain converting information from short-term memory to long-term memory. Spaced practice prevents the exponential “forgetting curve” by signaling to the brain that the information is crucial. While 7 in the Bible is normally associated with “fullness”, “completion” and “perfection”, it is also the number of breakthroughs.
Hence, the Lord gave Joshua the strategy of “7 priests carrying 7 trumpets, 7 days and 7 times”. Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets (Joshua 6:4). The 7 trumpets in Revelation 8-11 talk about the impending judgement on the earth and the rebellious. The 7 priests carrying 7 trumpets around Jericho went in front to the ark (the presence of the Lord), symbolizing the judgement that was going to fall on Jericho. Carrying the ark around Jericho and repeating this exercise for 7 days was to instill implicit obedience. On the 7th day until they finished the 7th round around Jericho nothing happened. Not a stone shook but when they completed the 7th circle and the priest blew the trumpets, they raised their voice in a victorious shout and the wall collapsed.
Repeat the promises until they shift from short-term memory into the long-term memory space. Patterns of positive thinking are formed by proclaiming the promises of God.
Memory consolidation and 7-times repetition:
- Brain: Intentional repetition of God’s will and God’s word rewires the brain into implicit obedience.
- Barrier: The barriers of doubt and disbelief are broken by stabilizing the brain into a permanent and long-lasting state. Memory consolidation reshapes the brain to trust God’s Word over the words of people. It restructures the thoughts about our identity, royalty and purity.
- Breakthrough: Your breakthrough is just one step away. Go around the barrier one more time in faith and witness the walls collapsing.
Memory consolidation by spaced repetition fortifies faith.
Prayer: Sovereign Lord, rewire my brain into a permanent state of trust and faith through memory consolidation. Amen.
