“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing”.
Kathryn Kuhlman (1907–1976), the American evangelist ended her messages with this thought-provoking statement: “Make room for the Holy Spirit and let Him have His way”.
Another famous statement of Ms. Kuhlman was “I am nothing. He is everything.” Her ministry was characterized by total dependence on the Holy Spirit and not on self-reliance. Total dependence is recognizing that we can do nothing which has eternal value without partnering with Him. We can do a lot of things that will be burnt as straw, hay and stubble on earth. We can build empires, fame and fortune that will perish on earth but to have a lasting impact we must learn to depend on the Holy Spirit. A life of total dependence for everything will host the presence of the Lord.
After the redeemed Hebrew slaves rebelled against the Lord by building a golden calf, and worshipping an idol, the Lord refused to go with them and said that He will send an angel to lead them into the Promised Land. Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here (Exodus 33:15). Moses refused to move an inch without the Lord. He went on to express his dependence on the Lord by saying, How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?” (Exodus 33:16). As we depend on the Lord for everything and recognize His presence in all our ways His power will manifest through us.
Dependence:
- Direct: As we depend on the Holy Spirit for guidance, He will direct us in the path of righteousness.
- Drive: The fire of God goes before Him and destroys the enemies as we walk in total surrender.
- Distinguish: God will make a distinction between us, who depend on Him, and those who rely on their own strength.
Our dependence on the Holy Spirit makes room for Him.
Prayer: My God My Jehovah, I will not move an inch without you leading the way. I can do nothing without you. Amen.
