John 2:10 “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
It is no coincidence that Jesus performed His first miracle at a wedding. Wedding feasts represent our covenant meal with Christ the Groom. Traditionally all marriages are concluded with a banquet. In this wedding at Cana of Galilee, it was the banquet of the groom. Many Bible scholars and historians say, Salome the mother of John (disciple of Jesus) and Mary (mother of Jesus) were sisters. Hence, Jesus was attending the wedding of His first cousin. The wedding feast symbolically confirms that every clause in the marriage covenant is accepted, agreed and authenticated. The table with a spread of lamb roast, bread, wine and other delicacies are shared by both parties. As the food is digested, the clause of the covenant is interwoven.
In the wedding, wine had run out. Every element in the banquet table was extremely important. Back in those days, water was contaminated and there were no purifiers; hence, wine was used instead of water. Wine also helped with the digestion of the elaborate, luxurious spread of food. The first miracle of Jesus at a wedding feast galvanises the importance of the ‘communion table’; the covenant meal that we have with our Saviour, Lord and King.
Communion that we share is not a piece of wafers and some juice. It accepts, authenticates and agrees to the covenant that Christ has made with us.
Communion, covenant meal qualifies us for the following:
1. Acceptance: Firstly, communion consummates the marriage covenant with Jesus. It is at communion that we are accepted; as the groom accepts his bride in a marriage covenant. We don’t have to cover the spots on our face with makeup. We might be rejected, criticised and condemned by the world but Christ accepts us just as we are. Romans 5:17 God has been so kind to us, and He has accepted us because of Jesus. And so we will live and rule like kings. When we come into a covenant with the Saviour, He will wash away our sins and spots and accept us as a newly married bride into the family of God. Communion is a sign of our acceptance as His bride.
2. Authentication: Secondly it authenticates the different clauses in the covenant. It confirms that we are a royal priesthood, holy nation and His own special people. It authenticates that we are the righteousness of God and are justified – Just as if we have never sinned. Covenant meals confirms new beginnings, new opportunities and authenticates the fulfilment of His promises and prophecies. Communion authenticates our righteousness in Him.
3. Agreement: Finally, communion is an agreement to fulfil the terms and conditions mentioned in the covenant, (the Bible). All the pledges, agreements and covenants have conditions to be fulfilled by both parties. Communion table is when we surrender to walk in holiness, purity and integrity and He promises to walk us into victory, triumph and supernatural success. Communion is a confirmation of His faithfulness to His covenant and our commitment to holiness.
Communion is not a rite, ritual or religious activity. It is a covenant meal with Christ where we renew our covenant to fulfil our part and He agrees to fulfil His part.
2 Corinthians 1:20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.
Prayer: Jesus, I eat the bread, in agreement to walk according to your Word and I drink the wine with the assurance that my sins and the past have been wiped away. Thank you for your faithfulness but help me to be integrous. Amen
