1 Samuel 18:7-8 As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly.
Insecurity is like a sunburn; if it is not treated it will turn into melanoma (skin cancer). Insecurity, pride and jealousy cannot be hidden for long. It will soon manifest and peep its ugly head in the conversations, decisions and will destroy divine directions. David the little shepherd boy slew the Giant Goliath with a slingshot and a pebble. It was customary in Israel for women to sing songs when the soldiers return from war and this victory against the Philistines was an exceptionally outstanding one. When they sang a song applauding David, insecurity gripped the heart of Saul. The Bible says, the very next day, an evil spirit forcefully overtook Saul. Murderous jealousy incarcerated his soul and Saul spent the rest of his life as a bloodthirsty homicide, hunting for the life of David.
Insecurity is a feeling of apprehensiveness, anxiety and lack of confidence. It is a natural human feeling but how we nurse or treat it would determine if the sunburn will heal or turn into a leprous infection of the soul. Comparison is the main cause that highlights the differences. Self-doubt accentuates the acumen, aptitude or attractiveness of another thereby igniting insecurity. Gift of the other person is for us to enjoy and appreciate, not to compare, covet and cower. Insecurity made a God appointed King, diabolical. His feelings ruined his faith.
Three deadly signs of insecurity are comparison, contempt and contention.
Faith vs Feelings:
- Comparison: We don’t have to be a celebrity to be celebrated. We don’t have to be someone else to be loved and appreciated. Remember God has inbuilt all the talents and gifts; might and muscle to fulfill our purpose on earth. Comparison kills authenticity and genuineness. Comparison makes us dissatisfied with ourselves and others. Comparison wrecks relationships. Comparison is a sin as we underestimate God’s ability when He created us. Our voice and nose was God’s choice. When we understand that our Master Builder has woven us together with all that we need to be ‘the Best’, we will benefit from the talents of others and be grateful for our own. Comparison is a sin.
- Contempt: Have you noticed, no matter how nice you are to some people, you can never make them love or appreciate you? Insecure people dislike those whom they compare themselves with. When we face repeated disdain, disapproval and disrespect, in most cases, the undercurrent is insecurity. King Saul detested David from the very minute insecurity gripped his heart. Contempt crushes love and friendship.
- Contention: Insecure people are contentious and controversial. What started as insecurity turned into deadly brutal evil spirit in King Saul. He even dared to assassinate the ordained Priests who helped David. Insecurity depleted the faith of Saul to even consult a medium (witch) before he died a pathetic death. Insecurity will devastate Godly standards. The stench and clench of insecurity will make people faultfinders and criticizers. Constructive criticism builds but disparaging criticism fueled by insecurity kills enthusiasm. Insecurity erupts contention.
Saul completely lost his faith as he was lead by the silly feelings of insecurity, jealousy and pride.
1 Timothy 6:6 Godliness with contentment is great gain.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, when I see the signs of insecurity insidiously creeping into my soul, alert and awaken me to the truth that you have blessed me with all that I need, to be the best me. Amen.
