2 Kings 3:15-16 While the harpist was playing, the hand of the Lord came on Elisha and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water.
A simple strumming of the guitar brought the hand of the Lord on Elisha. Worship invites the mighty, all-powerful and magnificent hand of the Lord over our circumstance. The king of Israel, king of Judah and king of Edom had mustered their troops in the desert of Edom but while they were waiting to attack Moab there was no more water for the army or the animals. The troops were dehydrated in the heat. This is when they went to Elisha the prophet. Elisha called for a harpist and while the harpist was playing (and probably Elisha was humming a song), the hand of the Lord came upon Elisha and he prophesied – For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink (vs 17). There were no storm clouds or thunder storms, yet the hand of the Lord not only filled the valleys with water for the thirsty hoard but also brought a miraculous victory over the enemy. The mind boggling miracle happened during the time of morning worship. The next morning, about the time for offering the sacrifice, there it was (vs 20).
We will experience the power hidden in the hand of the Lord when there is a continual offering of praise, worship and thanksgiving in our home and hearts. Jewish worship hours to offer a sacrificial lamb were at 9am and at 3pm. As they were worshipping the Lord, the waters filled the valley. There was neither wind nor rain to make the ground soggy. The horses and chariots would have got stuck in the mushy mud if there was a heavy downpour but the Lord caused rain from the mountains to fill the valley.
Experience the hand of the Lord:
1. Song: May the song of praise and thanksgiving never leave your lips. As we keep singing the hand of the Lord will cause the streams of blessings to flow towards us. Worship activates the hand of the Lord to fulfill His promises.
2. Sacrifice: Sacrifice of praise stimulates the hand of the Lord. “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise–the fruit of lips that openly profess His name” (Hebrews 13:15). It is easy to praise on a pleasant day but praising during a problematic phase is a sweet sacrifice.
3. Success: Your success is hidden in God’s hands. If you can’t strum the guitar or a harp, raise your hands in worship and God’s mighty hand will unite with yours and bring victory.
Worship ignites the powerful hand of the Lord into action and will turn the dry deserts into green pastures.
2 Kings 3:20b Water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.
Prayer: Almighty Father, may the song on my lips and the gratitude in my heart activate your mighty hand to bring success. Help me to offer ‘sacrifice of praise’ even when my valley is dry and I’m hurting. Amen.
