04 April 2026 – Perseverance – Part 3

2 Samuel 3:1 There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David; and David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker.

“Perseverance” is persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

After the death of King Saul, David ruled the tribe of Judah from Hebron for seven years and Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, ruled Israel for about 2 ½ years. The ongoing civil war between Judah and Israel lasted over 7 years. David’s promotion from a shepherd to the King of Israel was not an easy journey.  David was anointed by Prophet Samuel as a teenager but when he was crowned as the King of Israel, he was 30 years old. So, his journey to the throne was about 15-20 years.

Some battles are worth fighting for. Fight for your family, fight for the purpose for which you have been called and anointed. Fight for the truth, purity and peace. Fight for everything that has eternal value. As Nehemiah said, Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes (Nehemiah 4:14). Our focus and fight must be to lead our family and the future generation to eternal purpose and acquire divine wealth that is transferable from the earth to eternity.

We live under the New and more superior covenant in the New Testament. Hence our battle strategies are different to those of David or Nehemiah. We don’t fight with swords, spears and shields of brass. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but they are mighty in God. We fight hatred with love, anger with a soft and gentle answer, offence with kindness, insult with honour, perversion with purity in thoughts and deeds. Some battles are not easy and quick. We have to buffet the body, crucify the flesh and kill pride and offence over and over again for the enemy to lose control over our lives.

God strengthens the perseverant:

  1. Prophecy: Fight for the prophecies in your life to be fulfilled by believing, confessing and standing firm.
  2. Posterity: Fight for the salvation of your family, children and future generation.
  3. Peace: Fight for peace by refusing to be offended.

Perseverance builds our future.

Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, strengthen me with spiritual weapons to fight my battles. Amen.
