16 May 2026 – Spiritual Understanding – Part 3

Colossians 1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.

“Spiritual Understanding” is perceiving the sovereignty of God over the reality of the world. It is looking at a situation through the eyes of God and understanding the ways of God through His Word. The gift of discernment is sharpened with spiritual understanding.

During the second missionary journey of the Apostle Paul, in Philippi, a city in Macedonia, he encountered a young girl with a spirit of divination. She followed Paul and the rest of the ministry team shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved” (Acts 16:17). Paul was not persuaded by the flattering of the serpentine spirit. He was able to discern that the propaganda was from a spirit of divination. People are tested by their praise (Proverbs 27:21b). The demonic spirit could not distract Paul by the flaunting loud praise.  Paul was so annoyed by the noisy demonic spirit that he turned around and rebuked the spirit and set the young damsel free.

Paul’s discernment was sharpened by spiritual understanding. Maturity in the knowledge of His will, divine wisdom and spiritual understanding comes by a disciplined and consecrated lifestyle. Paul’s service was marked by “great humility and tears” (Acts 20:19). He served the Lord with great humility and loved the lost selflessly. Paul was not moved by the praise, acceptance or rejection of people. His only goal in life was to fulfill the assignment given to him.

Speaking in tongues edifies the soul and sharpens the spirit. Paul declared, ‘I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you’ (1 Corinthians 14:18). Humility, selflessness and holiness perfect our spiritual hearing.

Spiritual Understanding:

  1. Communication: Talk more to God than people. The more we communicate with the Lord, the clearer our spiritual understanding will become.
  2. Consecration: Consecration in our thoughts, words and reactions fine tunes our spiritual understanding.
  3. Commitment: Unwavering commitment to ‘serve the Lord in humility’, and to ‘study the Word diligently’, enhances our spiritual understanding.

“Subservience, selflessness and sacrifice sharpen our spiritual hearing”.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, I will serve you with great humility and much tears. Amen
