John 6:35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty”.
Pangs of hunger makes a person “hangry” (hungry+angry). Our brain consumes 20% of the body’s total energy. When we go without food for long periods of time the blood glucose or (brain-fuel) drops triggering the stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These stress hormones can increase our anxiety and stress levels. Hunger distracts and hijacks focus.
In Matthew 15:29-39 we read about the crowd who listened to the sermon of Jesus on the mountainside along the Sea of Galilee for 3 days without food!Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” (Matthew 15:32). Educational Psychology says that the attention span in a lecture is only 10 to 15 minutes but the lecture class of Jesus went on non-stop for 4,320 minutes! Jesus was able to keep the attention and the concentration of the crowd as He was feeding them with the Living Bread. Satiated by His preaching the people did not even notice the growling bellies for 3 days. The words of Jesus were wholesome, nutritious and tastier than a palatial feast.
The Bible is not ‘black print’ on ‘white paper’. When we open the Bible, a divine banquet is laid out before us.
Jesus is the Bread of Life:
- Fuel: God’s Word is the brain fuel that teaches us what is best for us and fuels us spiritually and emotionally.
- Fear: A soul that is starved will be hangry and fearful. God’s Word will drive out fear. Those who feed on the Living Bread will never be hungry, hangry or harassed.
- Feed: The Word of God tastes like steaming hot bread from the oven. God’s Word melts in our mouth like a light, fluffy and yummy bread. Just as we wash our hands and sit on the table to enjoy a well-cooked meal, we must cleanse our mind and prepare our soul to feed on God’s Word.
“Feed on the Living Bread!”
Prayer: Jesus the Bread of Life, I will feed, cherish and nourish myself on your Living Word. Amen
