Hebrew 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
Entitlement mentality is a monkey on the back that can take people off their course. Entitlement mentality is “unearned expectation”. It is a belief and a mindset of a person that thinks that they deserve certain privileges, rewards, or special treatment—regardless of effort, merit, or circumstances. In the unmerited expectation that they deserve preferential treatment, they would stop striving, learning and appreciating. Such people would expect appreciation; they would compare themselves constantly and be easily offended.
Samson was anointed and empowered with supernatural strength to be the judge over Israel. The divine power was to bless the nation of Israel and not to build his name and fame. Samson started well and subdued the Philistines. He judged Israel for 20 years but in the latter part of his life he misused and abused the power of God and meandered away from his calling. He took the precious anointing, divine power and the grace of God for granted. Then his love turned towards a woman named Delilah who turned him over to the enemy three times but the Lord set him free. However, she pressured him to share the secret of his strength and he gave in. Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had left him (Judges 16:20). Samson misused the anointing to gratify his greed. The mindset of entitlement blinded him to the mercy of God and rendered him spiritually dead. The monkey of entitlement destroyed his destiny.
The Monkey of Entitlement Mentality:
- Arrogance: Entitlement mentality will make people arrogant and ungrateful. If they don’t humble themselves, God will humble them.
- Assumption: The monkey of entitlement will corrupt the mind with false assumptions and inappropriate presumptions.
- Abuse: The monkey of entitlement will abuse the grace of God and the goodness of people.
“Entitlement mentality is a silent monkey that erodes growth.”
Prayer: Dearest Holy Spirit, make me spiritually agile and alert that I may never take your grace, love and anointing for granted. Amen.
