21 June 2026 – Truth – Part 4

John 18:38“What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

Opinions of people are not the truth as they are formed by the limited perspectives, exposure and cultural background of the community. The perspectives and judgements of the majority is not the truth as it only reflects their personal opinions. Hence it is important not to be swayed by the praise or criticism of people. Those who are hyped by the praise of people will soon be discouraged by their disapproval. The truth is God’s opinion about us. “People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). The truth is God’s opinion about us.

Paul and the 276 prisoners swam themselves to safety after a shipwreck to a nearby island. The islanders showed them unusual kindness and provided warmth for the terrified and trembling prisoners. While Paul was helping to build a bonfire to keep themselves warm a viper driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. At once, the islanders thought Paul must be a murderer; though he had escaped the sea, justice had not allowed him to live. Their opinion was based on their limited cultural exposure and spiritual maturity. However, when Paul shook the snake into the fire and suffered no harm, they changed their opinion in moments that Paul must be a god! Paul did not let the critics affect his mind or moods. He learnt his lessons from Jesus. “But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people” (John 2:24).

Our humility and spiritual maturity will be tested by the praise of man.

So, don’t let the scorn of the slanderers discourage you nor the praise of the people excite you. People are tested by their praise (Proverbs 27:21).

Truth is God’s thoughts and God’s opinion about you. The plans He has for us are good and not evil.

  1. Comments: The comments of people are only their opinion based on their exposure and experience. Receive it and process it circumspectly.
  2. Critics: Constructive criticism builds us but defaming criticisms that demoralize us must be rejected.
  3. Compliments: Be cautious about the compliments. They are a test of our humility.

“The truth is not the judgement of people – it is God’s opinion about us”.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, help me to be cautious like you and never entrust myself to the praise of people.  Amen.
