05 June 2023 – The Hand of the Lord – Part 2

Psalm 32:4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.

The heavy hand of God means the weightiness of conviction that comes upon us. The heavy hand of God will drain pride that comes from personal achievements and redirect us to rely on God’s richness and resources. The heavy hand of God will lead us out of the walls of selfishness, self-centeredness and self-condemnation to humble ourselves under the hand of God. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6-7). The heavy hand of God reroutes us to humble ourselves under His mighty Hand. Being concerned about our cares is the evidence that we have still not completely humbled and surrendered.

The hand of the Lord is also heavy on our enemies. The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; He brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumors (1 Samuel 5:6). The Philistines had captured the Ark of the Covenant from the Israelites. While Israel was mourning about the loss, God’s heavy hand came upon their enemies. When the enemy rejoices over what he has stolen from us the hand of the Lord will be heavy on them and inflict them. The Philistines moved the Ark of the Covenant to another city, Gath. But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic (1 Samuel 5:9). The heavy hand of God humbled the enemy until they returned back what they had taken from Israel.

We don’t have to fight against our enemies who steal our career growth, harm our children or close doors of opportunity. God’s heavy hand will come upon the lethal enemy until they return what belongs to us. For I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children (Isaiah 49:25). As we seek His face rigorously, His hand will strike the enemy fiercely.

The hand of the Lord:

1.     Hurt: God will raise His heavy hands on those who hurt us. We might be helpless with our human abilities but the heavy hand of God will go against those who try to harm us. “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm” (Psalm 105:15).

2.     Humble: As we humble ourselves under His mighty hand God will humiliate the vicious enemy who hurled insults, inflicted and incited us with pain. Allow the Lord to fight and just humble under His mighty hand.

3.     Heavy: God’s heavy hand is against those who devise evil. Misuse of power, authority or influence and persecution or oppression of the helpless will raise God’s heavy hand on the wrongdoer.

While the heavy hand of God will be upon our enemies and the evildoers, we can rest under His mighty hands.

1 Samuel 5:11b For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it.

Prayer: Father God, I will humble myself under your mighty hands as your heavy hand goes against my demeanors and the diabolical forces. Amen.
