18 June 2026 – Truth – Part 1

John 18:38“What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary meaning of truth is “the body of real things, events, and facts: actuality; also: the real facts about something”. Truth is objective and absolute yet our understanding and interpretation of it could be subjective.  When we say that truth is objective, it is independent of one’s feelings. For example, the earth’s gravity is a constant downward force. This law remains true whether you believe it or not.  However, truth can also be subjective to people’s feelings, experiences and interpretations and can be misunderstood and misinterpreted. In ancient times people believed that the earth was flat. The improper belief did not change the truth or facts.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32). However, if we try to understand the truth with our intellect or feelings we will be misled. We need the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit to guide us into the truth.  But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth (John 16:13).

Pilate asked Jesus “What is truth?” but did not stop to listen to Jesus. Truth is not what people think about you. Jesus was called a glutton, drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 11:19). That is what the envious and disbelieving crowd spoke about Him. The Pharisees called Jesus Beelzebub, “the prince of demons” (Matthew 12:24). They judged Jesus and slandered about Him that He was an illegitimate child (John 8:41). Nothing that was spoken about Jesus altered the truth that He was the Son of Man and the Saviour of the World.

Don’t be crushed by the opinions or judgement of people. The truth cannot be altered that we are children of the Most-High God.

Truth Prevails:

  1. Ignored: Those who are ignored by men are very important to the Lord. When you are ignored, praise God for you are noticed by heaven.
  2. Insignificant: What is insignificant to men is very impressive to the Lord. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight (Luke 16:15).
  3. Isolated: Are you isolated and ostracized? Isolation from people makes room for aloneness with God.

“Truth prevails over the opinions or judgement of people”.

Prayer: Dearest Lord Jesus, help me to dwell on the truth and not be depressed about wrong opinions and judgement.  Amen.
