Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
When you are stressed, your body produces cortisol to help you deal with threats. However, chronic and high cortisol may negatively impact brain health, interfering with memory formation and retention. It can block the process your brain uses to create and access memories, making it harder to focus. Chronic stress is one of the main causes of brain fog. Being overwhelmed creates more stress.
Chronic stress results in brain fog that makes thinking harder and tasks longer.
Jesus gave us a simple solution to overcome stress. He said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself (Matthew 6:25). Worry does not improve the situation – it worsens it!
David and his fighting men came back to their home in Ziklag to find the place ransacked by the Amalekites. Their wives and children had been taken captive and the houses were burnt down. They were left with nothing but a smoldering barren land. Each man wept for his family until they had no strength left and in the extremity of their anxiety they turned against their leader, brother and friend David. David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God (1 Samuel 30:6). David did not respond in stress; He sought the Lord for direction and he recovered all that he lost.
Stress creates a mental barrier to clear thinking. Don’t rush into action, don’t panic and don’t try to find quick solutions. Take a break, pray and seek His counsel. The Holy Spirit is the best counselor for all our problems – medical, financial, legal or emotional. The key to unlock peace in panic is to turn our attention to the Lord.
Destress:
- Overthink: Unlearn the habit of overthinking; it increases stress and results in brain fog.
- Overwhelm: Calm yourself when overwhelmed by repeating the promises of God. The Lord is bigger than our problems.
- Overcome: Stress is a learnt habit – unlearn it and overcome stress with a song of praise.
“Why panic when you can pray?”
Prayer: Dearest Holy Spirit, teach me to calm myself in your presence instead of reacting in fear. Amen.
