Psalm 18:29 For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall.
Eagles use the powerful rising air currents generated by storms to lift themselves to higher altitudes with minimal energy. Storms create strong vertical winds called “updrafts”. Eagles don’t fight against the updraft by flapping their wings; instead, they position their wings to harness the rising air currents that allow them to soar. By riding the wind, eagles can glide and gain altitude without constantly flapping their wings and expending energy.
This is a beautiful epitomic representation of how we must face the storms of life. The storms of “illness, redundancy, financial/business loss, betrayal, disappointment” etc are inevitable. Rather than cringing at the storm clouds, we must learn to position our wings to glide into the updraft and soar higher. A challenge or a crisis is yet another opportunity to experience the awesome power and might of our God. No mountain is too high, no flashflood is too fierce and no wilderness is too dry to derail us when we walk hand-in-hand with the Risen Saviour Jesus.
To draw strength and to gain momentum from the uprising currents of the storm that we are facing, we must rise up in faith, run against the troop and race into the windstorm. Eagles don’t find a rocky cavern or cave to hide. Similarly, don’t walk in denial. Don’t ignore the problem. Don’t find cheap pleasures to medicate the pain. Face the storm with fasting and prayer. Grow in faith by meditating on God’s promises. As each storm has a meteorological name, we must seek the Lord for a promise for each storm that we face. Then, mull over the promise day and night until the storm passes. Meditating on the promise will give us the lift to glide into the storm. Ride on the storm.
Calm in the Storm:
- Rise: Ruminating on the promises will give us lift to soar above the storm into the calm clear sky.
- Race: Race into the storm. Don’t hide.
- Ride: Ride on the storm by positioning yourself on God’s Word. Don’t let the problem rock your faith.
The storm is the updraft that helps us to soar.
Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, give me the confidence that the challenge I face is only an updraft to soar higher. Amen.
