Isaiah 40:31 But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
Meteorologists and the media give names to storms to clearly communicate the effects and the warning of bad weather. There could be multiple storms in the same region and giving the storm a name will avoid confusion. We face storms as we go through life. The names of our storms could be “illness, redundancy, financial/business loss, betrayal, disappointment” etc. There will be times when multiple storms might batter and blow against our homes at the same time. God’s Word teaches us to overcome the storms and soar over them.
Those who put their trust in the Lord are like eagles that fly into the storm, using the very winds of the storm to gain lift and soar above the storm clouds. “Bird Behaviour” changes before a storm. Birds sense the drop in air pressure, falling temperatures, and low-frequency sound waves. Feed frenzy (eating as much as possible and stocking-up on energy by feeding), sudden silence and early evacuation to find safety and shelter are common behaviours of low flying birds. However, not so with the eagles. Eagles don’t seek food, shelter and safety; they get excited when storm clouds gather. They spread their wings and plunge into the storm! The eagle uses the wind of the storm to soar on high.
Most humans react exactly like a low flying bird – elf owl, sparrow or robin. When they see a storm approaching, they instinctively duck and hide. A physical, financial or relationship storm would trigger the fight-or-flight response. The key factor that changes our behaviour from an emu to that of an eagle is trusting in the Lord and waiting on Him to renew our strength.
Calm in the Storm:
- Warning: When the warning signs show up, flap your wings and warm-up to soar.
- Wind: Don’t go into hiding. The storm clouds will take you higher.
- Weathercast: God’s Word is the weathercast. Listen to the Lord and learn from Him to navigate through the storm into calmness.
Wait on the Lord and renew your strength to soar above the storm.
Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, teach me to glide into the storm and find serenity in You. Amen.
