Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Emotional and circumstantial insecurity significantly increases stress levels. Insecurity in relationships, job instability or self-doubt triggers high levels of cortisol and adrenaline. Chronic increase of cortisol results in overactive stress response.
Insecurity is a byproduct of over relying on one’s ability, talents and wisdom. Shifting our identity from how the world views us to how God values us will solidify the sense of security and identity in Him. We can never protect the divine gifts from God with human strength or wisdom. Everything we have is from Him. We own nothing. We brought nothing into this world and will take nothing from this world. Worldly gifts, positions and wisdom are graciously given to us to build God’s kingdom. The moment a pride and ego replace the identity in Christ Jesus, the downfall begins.
The major cause of King Saul’s downfall was his insecurity and ingratitude. He did not trust God for wisdom and strength nor did he seek the will of God. His identity shifted from how God values him to how people viewed him. When he disobeyed the command of the Prophet Samuel and offered the burnt offering himself, he justified his actions by claiming that the people were scattering and that he felt compelled to act (1 Samuel 13:12b). Sauls impetuous reaction to stress and insecurity dug his grave. Similarly, Saul’s fearful reaction to the victory of David turned him into a bloodthirsty monster. And Saul cast the spear, for he said, “I will pin David to the wall!” But David escaped his presence twice (1 Samuel 18:11).
If we build our identity on position, power or potential, we are on loose grounds. Anyone who draws their sense of worth from their wisdom or their wealth are setting themselves up for failure and disappointment.
Destress:
- Wisdom: Wisdom, understanding and prudence come from the Lord.
- Wealth: The greater the networth and bigger the fear of losing it. Our security is in the Giver and not the gifts.
- Work: Work is God’s design to take dominion over the world. It was never meant to define our identity, but to magnify the sovereignty of God.
Our identity on Christ Jesus keeps us stress-free.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, You are my source, strength and security. Amen.
