19 May 2026 – Spiritual Understanding – Part 6

Colossians 1:9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.

“Spiritual Understanding” is looking at a situation through the eyes of God and understanding the ways of God through His Word. Spiritual understanding empowers us to discern when to say ‘Yes’ and when to say ‘No’. A purpose-driven person cannot entangle themselves in futile and fruitless conversations and commitments. Spiritual understanding opens the ear gate and eye gate to prudence, discernment and divine insight.

Nehemiah and his team were rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem however the envious enemies tried their best to deceive them with their words and threats to stop the good work. They called Nehemiah for a discussion four times. Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.”  But they were scheming to harm me; so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer (Nehemiah 6:2-4). If Nehemiah was not discerning, he would have trapped himself into danger. How did Nehemiah discern the evil that was wrapped in the message from the connivers?

The Holy Spirit predominantly leads us with peace. If your heart is troubled about a plan or a proposal, refuse to say “Yes”. The uncertainty and ambiguity about an issue is a clear indication to slow down. When there is a push or a rush to do something, STOP. The Holy Spirit will never push us to do anything – He leads, He does not drag us. On the contrary the devil forces his way through. Don’t make any hasty decisions under pressure. Peace is the key.

Spiritual Understanding:

  1. Futile: Never engage in anything that is futile just to please people.
  2. Fruitless: Never be part of a fruitless project.
  3. Focused: One life – live it for Jesus. Be focused on your purpose.

“Spiritual understanding empowers us with discernment in our decisions”.

Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, lead me in the paths of righteousness for your name’s sake. Amen
